Meadow Haven's Horse Donation Policy

If You're Considering Surrendering Your Horse to Meadow Haven, Please Read this Entire Page Carefully.

Meadow Haven is only accepting donated horses on a very limited case-by-case basis

If you are referred to us by the Sheriff's Dept, a Humane Society, or your veterinarian, we may be able to waive the one time cash donation, this will be done on a case by case basis. We accept horses with a referral and can arrange for pick up for a fee.

Meadow Haven will not accept any horses when you just show up with them. If you'd like to discuss the possibility of us taking your horse, please use the form below and be honest and as detailed as you can. We need to know what we're up against, and not have any surprises.

Once a horse is donated to Meadow Haven, and the owner has signed the donation form, the horse is legally owned by Meadow Haven Horse Rescue. The previous owner terminates all rights to the horse. The horse's care is at our sole discretion, and all decisions regarding the horse are made by MHHR staff.

Meadow Haven is not a retirement facility. Each equine will be evaluated by qualified individuals, whether they be veterinarians, farriers, trainers, etc.  All adoptable equines will be posted on our website and notices will be sent out across the internet to help find them an adoptive home.  Whether they go on to be a show horse, 4H horse, family pet, kid's pony, trail horse, companion, or pasture pet we will do our best to place each animal.

The Process

Normally, we ask for a $250.00 donation with the horse to help defray costs on horses who are donated. This is a one time fee and the only fee we charge. This fee helps us to care for the horse for their first month with us.

We require that you sign our Donation Agreement, which gives Meadow Haven ownership of the horse(s). The Equine Questionnaire has many questions that you can answer to help us find your horse the right home. Written documentation of any current veterinary services must accompany the horse, as well as a list and any available current medications the horse is on.

Frequently Asked Questions

---> Can you visit your horse after adoption?

While it is at Meadow Haven, yes, but please call before you come.  Just as with many other animal adoptions, adopters are screened, references checked and a match is made. Once the adoption takes place, we follow up for the rest of the horses life. We cannot give you the names of the adopters, but we do screen them thoroughly and follow up on the placement to be sure everything is well.

---> What if I change my mind after signing him over?

You should seriously consider whether you want to donate the horse prior to bringing it to the rescue facility. Once the horse has entered our system, and s/he receives any care or treatment necessary, we can no longer return him to you unless you are able to cover the cost of his care and treatment(s).

---> Can you pick up my horse?

Yes. Depending on how far away you are, we can arrange to have someone pick him up. There is a per mile fee to be paid for the trailer use and driver. We prefer you deliver him if possible, then there is only the $250.00 tax deductible donation. Horses may be dropped off by appointment only.

---> Can horses be resold?

No, they do not belong to the new adopter. We try to find permanent loving homes for our horses, but occasionally people must move, divorce, or have financial difficulties and must return a horse, they are always happy that we are here and can continue caring for them.
