Star..

My name is Star, and I am a nice looking (if I do say so myself), 12 year old sorrel AQHA mare with a story to tell.

I feel like my life just began about a month ago when my former owner decided she no longer wanted me and took me to Meadow Haven Horse Rescue in Nixon, Texas, where I met my guardian angel Darla Cherry. I was suffering with a serious breathing condition and basically was unable to do anything by stand and try to get air into my lungs.

On June 25th, some nice people came to visit me and suddenly big plans were being made. On the 29th, I was loaded into a trailer and taken to Retama Equine Hospital in San Antonio, Texas where I was put into a roomy stall with shavings and my own fan. The next day, Dr. Keith Huffman performed surgery and I got a permanent tracheotomy. I wish Darla could have been there as I was finally able to draw my first breath without struggling. There are no horse words to describe how that felt!! Though it was a bit sore and people came in numerous times a day to check on me and dress my wound, it was worth it. On Friday, July 3rd, I was released from the hospital and got to go to my new foster home in Rockport, Texas.

So here I a very happy mare with her own stall/paddock (and I still have a fan!), plenty of good food, hay water, carrots, and did I mention cookies? My new foster mom assures me every day as she cleans my surgical site and puts on my medicine that I will always have a safe haven and I take a deep breath, and I believe her.

A special thanks to Diane Davis and Dr. Keith Huffman, without you Star would still be struggling.

Cecil..

My name is Cecil, and I am a very sweet little donkey.

I am around 7-8 years old, and though I've been through a lot. A very kind police officer had been keeping an eye on me for a while when I was with my previous owner, and finally was able to save me.

On July 21, a phone call came into Meadow Haven Horse Rescue. It was the officer, and she informed MHHR director, Darla Cherry, that we needed to come and pick up a donkey that looked as though he'd been hit by a car. Little did they know at the time, what looked like I had been hit by a car, was actually me being drug behind one. I'll never know why they did what they did, but I am so happy to be at Meadow Haven. When I got here, I was very depressed, hungry, and in pain. Now that I'm being taken care of, and my wounds are being treated, I actually get excited and sometimes I even bray.

It is going to be a long road for me, a couple of my wounds are very deep. The vet feels confident that they're mostly just hard to look at, and with the proper care, they should heal up with very little scars if any at all. The vet and Mrs. Cherry are not sure what's going to happen with my eye, but hopefully the damage wasn't enough to hurt it forever.

UPDATE: Cecil is now happy, healthy, and living at his new adoptive home. His wounds have healed, and all that remains of his ordeal is a tiny scar on his shoulder. His eye healed perfectly, and didn't effect his vision. He is now enjoying life, and he has people who love him.
