They are NOT disposable!
We believe animals are not just here to serve our purpose of using them. They can be enjoyed for their beauty, nobility, and character. There is an esthetic quality to all of God's creations, which many overlook. Once they have served their "purpose" and can't be ridden any longer, should they be kicked to the curb? Is this what the pony who taught your child how to ride deserves? The animal who, after having his stomach kicked, with a piece of metal in his mouth and cinch to tight, who never complained, and carried his rider many many miles. Is this what he deserves?
We are not against breeders BUT BELIEVE THAT IF YOU BREED YOUR HORSE YOU NEED TO HAVE THE RESOURSES TO CARE FOR THE BABY AND KEEP IT PERMANENTLY. If you are breeding just to sell the baby, you may be sadly disappointed. Babies bring very little return on investment at auction which is where many breeders send their excess babies in the fall, not wanting to feed them through the winter. Many end up slaughtered!
We ask that people please quit breeding excessively and dumping their babies. We realize that there are occasions when people have good intentions to breed and sell, and if they find a suitable home for them, great. But please do not breed unless you are willing to accept the responsibility of caring for the baby for a long time. It might be for a lifetime if a suitable home is not found. There is an over abundance of horses in this country already. Don’t add to the surplus and dispose of your foals at auction in the fall!
Babies, horses needing rehab, and elderly horses, or sound riding horses can be placed at Meadow Haven Horse Rescue for adoption. The owner will receive a tax credit for the value of the horse- usually more than the auction will bring (often horses can be written off for up to $5000. Check with your accountant
If you have a horse and need to find it a new home, please review our requirements to donate your horse.
If your horse is permanently crippled, we are presently full and cannot accept any more permanent residents. You can however fill in the Owners Listing Request Form to have him placed on our web site and locate a home for him that way. We get more than 4000 hits a month. You will need to do your own placement and screening of the potential adopter and Meadow Haven Horse Rescue is not liable for any responses you will receive on your ad.
If your horse needs to be put to sleep per your vets instruction- PLEASE DO NOT CALL US TO COME GET HIM. GET A SECOND OPINION IF YOU NEED TO BUT DO NOT LET HIM SUFFER.
IF YOUR HORSE IS JUST OLD AND YOU HAVE A RANCH WHERE HE HAS RESIDED ALL HIS LIFE- PLEASE RECONSIDER! MOVING AN OLD HORSE FROM HIS FRIENDS OR HOME IS OFTEN DETRIMENTAL TO HIS HEALTH. ITS VERY STRESSFUL. IF AT ALL POSSIBLE, YOU NEED TO CARE FOR HIM AND ALLOW HIM TO LIVE OUT HIS DAYS HAPPILY IF POSSIBLE IN FAMILIAR SURROUNDINGS.
Please Help Us Care for the Horses.
All donations will be used for veterinary costs, feed and transport, and to purchase land. Our goal is to find loving homes for the horses who can be adopted, and provide a permanent sanctuary for the animals who cannot (on a space available basis).
Sponsors will receive a tax receipt, photo and update!
